Chennai's up-and-coming suburb along the ECR corridor in Padur, nearly 70 km from the client family’s native Minjur, a two-bedroom apartment sat in an area where sea breeze and sun meld yet compete daily.
The client longed for something familiar yet modern; a 1200 square feet home that feels comforting and nostalgic with contemporary elements to relish with his wife and a newborn.
The project came as a blank canvas and was typical of mass housing, with plastered walls, exposed service lines, and columns protruding from walls.
atelier NORD read these factors as part of the context, the reality of most middle-income housing, with a dream of luxury lurking in the spaces.
The site’s orientation, climate, and compact layout became starting points. Padur’s coastal proximity brings humidity and harsh sunlight, requiring a home that is naturally airy, shaded.
atelier NORD's touch to this was blending traditional textures with modern design.

Design flowed with curves; soft arches that turn load bearing important structures into highlights.
Stark among these is the red arched wall in the living area, detailed with gold motifs of palm trees, animals, and bushes, adding a touch of storytelling and tradition.

Each element tells a story of thoughtful design, where arched niches frame everyday life and cane webbing adds visual rhythm.

Every strand of rattan in this coffee table was meticulously hand-woven to create a dance of light and shadow at the heart of our Weave & Vannam living space. Look closer and you'll find the geometric precision that belies the warmth it brings. A pattern that draws from traditional South Indian weaving techniques but speaks with contemporary elegance.
The reclaimed Burma teak frame doesn't just support the weave; it embraces it, creating a conversation between materials that have centuries of stories between them.

GALLERY

The heart of our Weave & Vannam home reveals itself through gentle contradictions. Fluted glass cabinets that both conceal and reveal, alongside that perfect pastel turquoise that whispers of Southern coastal mornings.
This is where materials, memories and modern living come together in delicious harmony.
